Prof. D.P.Kothari, Ex. Director IIT Delhi, delivered a 'Expert Talk' on 'Energy Environment problems Facing the third world'

Dr. D.P.Kothari, the former Director of IIT Delhi visited UPES on March 20, 2018 and interacted with students. He advised students and gave 'GuruMantra' of being successful Electrical Engineer. He emphasis on the 'exponential increase in demand of Electrical Engineers' and bright prospectus for them. He also Discussed on the 'Energy Environment Problem......' and also explained the role of 'Electrical Engineers' for same.
He also appreciate the 'Power System Laboratory' and also suggested that this can be one of Most innovative Laboratory and will provide the most advanced learning for students.

Workshop on Condition Monitoring of Electrical Equipments was organized on 15^th and 16^th March 2018

Two-day workshop was organized for the students of M Tech Energy Systems and Renewable Energy Engineering first year, B Tech Power System Engineering and B Tech Electrical Engineering final year on Condition Monitoring of Electrical Equipments. Industry expert Mr. Hemant Bari how is presently working as an Deputy Manager in Dhanu Thermal Power Plant 500MW on the condition monitoring segment of Thermal Power Plant was invited for the lecture delivery. Mr. Hemant Bari is the lifetime member of Condition Monitoring Society of India having more than 20 years of experience.

In this workshop class sessions were organized where the basics of condition monitoring was taught. Session included the present requirement of condition monitoring and its importance with respect to the growing competition in power market. Field visit was also organized within the campus to perform the practical on live electrical motors where students has used the vibration meter to determine the performance of electrical induction motor. Students has recorded the data in field and in class, the performance analysis was done where students learn how to analyze the performance of various electrical machines.

Condition monitoring is also important to analyze the performance of most of the Renewable Energy Power Plant like monitoring the vibration of Wind Blades, monitoring the solar PV Cell health etc. and proved to be very useful for the students, as Mr. Hemant has explained the scope of research required on various aspects of condition monitoring in Indian context.

In final session test was conducted on that basis students were evaluated and certificates were distributed to all the qualified students.  

DHAKRANI HYDROELECTRIC POWER PLANT

 B.Tech Electrical VI semester students has visted to Dhakrani Hydo Electric Power Plant on 24/02/2018. The plant utilizes its power from hydro energy of river Yamuna .It is owned by Uttarakhand Jal Vidyut Nigam Limited (UJVNL). It is located in Dakpathar, Dehradun. The power channel length is 13.6 km. Dhakrani hydro power plant has 3 units for generation . The installed capacity of the plant is (3 X 11.25 )MW. The plant was completed in the year 1965 . It utilizes 200 cumecs of water by constructing a 516.5 m long gated barrage across river Yamuna at Dakpathar, 3 km. downstream of Kalsi (Dehradun), into a 13.6 km. long lined power channel.

Two power houses first at Dhakrani with an installed capacity 33.75 MW and the second at the tail end Dhalipur with an installed capacity 51.0 MW were constructed to generate hydro power utilizing the available drop of about 50 m. in this reach.

Students got the opportunity to have a insight view of operation and control of Hydro Power Plant. This visit helps students in understanding the critical issues related to hydro power plant as this plant experience various fluctuations in flow during whole year. Plant engineers has shown the control room to our students which was equipped with various advance controlling system and helped students to understand the basic operation of Hydro Power Plant.

Students also visited the repairing and maintenance shop where basic overview of standards and procedures for maintenance and replacement was discussed about various electrical and mechanical equipment used in the plant.

Students also visited the plant substation where the layout of switchgear and protection were shown.

Open Session on E-Vehicles: Challenges & Opportunities

An open session entitled “E-Vehicles: Challenges & Opportunities by Mr. Rohit Goel, Sales & Network Management Professional- Automobile Industry Expert, is being organized for the students of B.Tech- PSE ( 3^rd & 4^th years), B.Tech- EL (3^rd & 4^th years) on 23^rd Feb 2018.  

Mr. Goel has been associated with General Motors as Director- Corporate Sales, CUV Business & Dealer Development & with Maruti Suzuki India Limited as National Head (Network Development).
